Prada’s Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection splashed onto the runway featuring an array of fashion-forward bold and bright stripes. The collection inspired a bevy of designers throughout the industry to follow suit and flocks of fashionistas all over the world to push the trend into full motion. This particular dress presented in the collection was definitely a standout and was featured on the covers of magazines such as Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and Instyle. A lengthened version of the dress was worn by up and coming actress Hailee Steinfeld, who starred in True Grit, at the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The color and mix of stripe thickness plus the ruffle trim, is what gives it a dazzling flair, something certainly not for the faint of heart. But at the core of the design is simple stripes; something that is super basic and really approachable.
I wasn’t able to find a definitive price point for this dress anywhere online, but did find it on Ebay for $1,999.99. The steal is the Stripe Fishtail Skirt by ASOS , which retails for $43.10. I prefer the skirt over the Prada dress because it’s more toned down as a skirt, and for me, that makes it more wearable. A bright piece like this doesn’t need much help, and really speaks for itself. It can be paired with any monochromatic top, whether it’s a tank, t-shirt, blouse, sweater or blazer.
What Prada did right was taking something as basic as a stripe and breathing new life into it, by using bold and bright color and proportion. What ASOS did right is making a fun and affordable version of the dress for people like me with an eye for style but a limited budget. What do you think of this skirt? Is this a look for less you would try?

I agree, it’s MUCH more wearable as a skirt, and (GASP!) work friendly when styled correctly!! I’ll be needing this, thank you soooo much for pointing it out!!
