The Breakdown
If you follow me on Twitter or YouTube, then you probably already know that I am spending Christmas up north with my husband’s parents this year. I’ve lived in Florida for many years, so as you can imagine, I have a lot of warm weather wear to stock up on. Item number one on my list of “how to survive a northern Christmas” is a super warm and cozy coat, which is why I am in love with the quilted and puffer jackets that are emerging as the trend of the season. The thick insulated layer is bound to keep you warmer than a simple lined coat, no matter what the materials. I’m not a big fan of the puffer jackets that make you look like a big ol box, so I chose styles that are either cropped or cinched at the waist to give the illusion of shape amongst all those layers. Be sure to check out the links below for all of the color options available.
- BB Dakota Just Enough Puff Jacket – ModCloth.com $94.99
- Athletic Lightweight Puffy Jacket – Forever 21 $27.80
- Faux-Fur Trim Hooded Quilted Jacket – Dillards $99.00
- Lightweight Puffer Jacket – Gap.com $98.00
- Coffee Shop Belted & Hooded Puffer Jacket – Nordstrom $62.00
I already have a pair of cold weather boots in black and a shredded scarf in tan, I picked up a few sweaters from the Old Navy “Buy A Sweater, Get One Free Sale“, and I have a coat and gloves on order. Please comment with any other tips you may have on how to stay warm when Walking in a Winter Wonderland.

Hope you have an amazing time up north! I spent a cold Thanksgiving up in NYC a few years back and it was about 30-40 degrees each day. Someone told me to wear thick tights under my jeans. I hadn’t thought of it before but O-M-G it saved me. It really made a huge difference. I don’t know how I would have done without them. They didn’t feel bulky or awkward, just WARM. So there’s my tip. :)
jackie, that is such a great tip! ive been practicing for cold weather by walking at night – it’s been 20 degrees here at night, can you belive it? on my walks ive realized, keep chapstick and a tissue on me at all times for the sniffles, haha. ive done pretty good with the boots and scarves, but i did learn that i needed to layer. i bought a few sweaters and henleys at the old navy sale but after bundling up realized that only my legs were still cold in jeans, so thick tights is a perfect suggestion! i could only think of bulky long johns under my skinnys which didn’t sound good at all, haha. thanks so much for the tip!
No problem!! I don’t remember what kind of tights they were but they were fairly thick and good quality.. maybe Gap.. but like I said it was a few years ago so I can’t remember. You go walking at night?! It’s been 40 here at night by me… but 20?!? Yikes!! Go you for doing that!
im on a mission to find some now, hehe. thanks again for the advice – i need it, lol!
It’s 14 degrees here in Boston right now! Soo cold! Your Christmas plans sound fun..and give you another excuse to do some shopping :) Make sure you pack a hat or earmuffs to keep your ears warm..and bring a good hand lotion so your hands don’t dry up from the temperature change! Lots of lip balm and layers sound like a great idea. Have fun!
i need all the tips i can get so thanks so much! adding a hat and/or earmuffs to my list. dang it’s cold in boston. i don’t know how you deal with those temperatures. i also can’t believe it’s only 10 degrees more at night here in florida, hah. looking forward to the holidays. thanks so much for your comment and tips :)
