The Breakdown
My sister is back in Florida visiting from Washington and we’re having so much fun together! She did the way popular lace manicure for me last month and I dared her to come up with another manicure as fun as the last. We ended up in Michael’s with a cart full of feathers and boas and this is what we came up with.

Feather Manicure DIY Ingredients:
- Bag of Feathers
- A Base Coat
- A Base Color
- Thick Clear Top Coat
- Tweezers
To recreate this look, first prep your nails with a base coat – I used Essie’s Protein Base Coat, followed by a base color. Color Club was nice enough to send me their Untamed Luxury Collection and I was so excited to use Pretty in Platinum. The pearly white silver contrasted beautifully against the exotic pattern and color in the feathers.
Next, top one nail with Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat and press a feather into the nail using tweezers quickly before it dries. With a small pair of scissors, cut the feather around the edges that extend past the nail. Apply one more coat of Seche Vite to secure the feather onto the nail. Repeat for the remaining nails.
Thanks so much to my sister for another fun manicure! So what do you think of this manicure? Would you wear this look?

I love it! It looks so beautiful!!! :)
thanks jackie :)
This is HOT. Love it.
thank you so much! i appreciate the comment love :)
SO HOT! Totally going to try this. I’m guessing you got a bag with some smaller feathers? I know Michael’s has all kinds of feathers, from big to small…
im so happy you like it! yes, the bag came with a variety (shape, colors, sizes) of feathers. the feathers we used were about 2 inches long, but we cut them to fit the nail, after we stuck it to a layer of top coat. thanks so much for the comment. i hope you’ll try it and i hope you’ll comment back with a link to a pic :)
I went to my friend’s boutique today to gather some beautiful feathers and you can get any size, it will work just like “theLooksForLess” replied :). My girls are about to be over in 1/2 hour and i’ve got the monday night movies ready and some fun fun fun is about to happen! Can’t wait to see how the mani turns out. I might do a pedi too!! :-D
so so excited about your comment!!! how did it turn out? you’ll have to comment back with a link to a pic!!! hope u love it!
omgorgeous, total nailgasm over here.
that’s awesome! thanks so much! are you going to try it out? hope so :) thanks for the comment!
This is amazing, I cant believe it never occurred to me before. Thank you so much! Already planning a trip to the art shop.
i hope you’ll try it! please comment back with a pic if you do :) thanks for the comment :)
I did this manicure with black and white spotted feathers and silver underneath, it came out AMAZING, so unique. Looked nice because i wear a lot of black as a staple color. I love that you and your sister came up with it, I still paint my nails with my sisters, too. I have pictures of how it came out that I’d love to share. And I’m wondering, I also like the lace manicure, do you have any other crafty, big pay-off recommendations? I like the idea of blending gradients too – have you tried this, and .. if you have, what’s your favorite method? sponge, layers, etc. thanks for posting so many great ideas, i’ve already shared them (and my feather nails) with my friends and family. was visiting my mom and she helped me trim the feathers on one hand and did a clear coat, love the bonding over fumes, age old tradition!
i am so happy to hear that you tried this. i always love the feedback as to who has tried what from my site :) can you upload a pic to twitpic and comment back to this post with a link to the twitpic? i would love to see it!
i havent tried any gradients yet – if you have any recommendations, id love to hear. the only gradients ive ever seen have been done with glitter and im not much of a glitter fan. i thought about doing a silver glitter gradient over white polish for new years, but that is probably the only time that i would wear glitter, with the exception of here and there.
thank you so much for sharing my blog with your friends and family. that is so awesome! i love that! bonding over fumes lol. i love it!
is there a way to do this to make it look like peacock feathers?? thats my favorite kind.
i guess you will have to find some peacock feathers. that would look great. if you do that, i hope you’ll comment back with a link to a pic. would love to see that. thanks so much for the comment! :)
WOW! These are amazing!! Where did you get the feathers? A craft store? Very inspiring! Thanks so much!!
hey andrea, thanks so much! i picked up a bag of feathers at Michael’s. the colors in person are so beautiful! you should try this and if you do, let me know :) thanks for your comment!
That’s so clever! :O And the lace one is too! I definitely have to try this sometime….unfortunately, I need to grow my nails a bit more first (damn my nail biting habits!)
hey natalie, i hope you’ll try both and comment back to this post with a link to a pic. these would look great on short nails. i love designs on short nails. thanks so much for your comment! hope you’ll keep in touch!
Hi! These were such an inspiration. Sort of tedious, but check out my results: http://iexhalevanillalace.tumblr.com/post/3108894517
Not as perfect as yours, but close :)
oh it turned out perfect! i love the contrast against teh light nail polish! i’m so happy you tried this and thanks so much for the comment / link to your nails. u rock! hope you’ll keep in touch!
thats amaze jennif girl u got some serious talent
awww, lucy!!! thank you! come back so i cn do your nails! i miss you and hope you had a very happy birthday!
Be right back! Running to Michaels! haha
In all seriousness, I stumbled upon this look and I was so excited to see how easy the steps were! At first glance I thought the feathers were painted on. I think I’m going to try and wear my nails like this all the time. So simple and so stunning!
You have gorgeous nails, by the way. How do you get your cuticles to look so neat?
hey danielle, thank you so much! that is so nice of you to say! i hope you’ll try this and comment back with a link to a pic! i actually don’t do anything to my cuticles. im shocked when i get such nice comments on my nails. about the only this i do for my nails is always wear Essie’s protein base coat. it helps with nail health and prevents staining :) thanks for the comment.
i am absolutely going to do this look. I have a Michael’s near my house – were the feathers a certain brand?? xoxo
no certain brand. just a bag of pretty feathers. fake, i hope lol. have you tried this yet? would love a pic if you did :)
Amazing! I bought a bag of feathers the other day at Hobby Lobby and can’t wait to try this look!
Keep up the amazing work!
have you tried it yet? would love to hear back and see how it turned out :)
I showed this to my cousin who is having a peacock themed wedding, she loved the idea & I’m pretty sure she’s going to use it for her bridesmaids!
no way, that’s awesome! if she tries this, you have to comment back with a link to a pic! thanks for the comment!
Whoa, how creative! I love this!
thanks so much! it was so fun! you should try it sometime. thanks for the comment!
Do you have to cut them after they are on your finger? Would it be easier to get them prior to pressing them onto the varnish?
Thanks for this great idea! It is beautiful!
easier to cut* them
hey tiffany, if you’re doing this yourself, its actually easier to glue first because the glue will hold the feather in place as you cut. otherwise, you may need someone else’s help for holding against the nail while trimming. hope this helps and thanks for the comment :)
I love these! By far the most creative and unique nail design I’ve ever seen! Could you give tips for putting the feather on the nail? Thanks!
most creative ever! no way, that’s so awesome! what an amazing compliment. thank you so much! if you are doing this yourself, stick them on first to hold them in place and then trim them. if you have help, i would trim them first, since you have an extra two hands lol. seal with a top coat :) i hope this helps and good luck. i hope you’ll comment back with a link to a pic when you try them :)
Our club members will love this! Where did you learn how to do this?
I love this; how creative you and your sister are! I’d like to try it, but think it would be quite difficult to do on yourself, particularly trimming the feathers with your non-dominant hand. the lace is also very innovative and looks great!
im so happy you love it! get together for a girls night and do each others nails. makes for such a fun night. hope you’ll try it and if you do, let me know :)
My blue toe nails look good too. HHhahahahahaha
This could be the most gorgeous manicure I’ve ever seen. I thought I had found true love with the lace manicure, but oh how fickle you’ve made me! This is stunning!
I can say now, that I will definitely be giving Michael’s a visit…
How do you remove them? Just with nail polish remover?
I love it!
yes, just nail polish remover :) you should try it – such a fun mani! :)
Love the feather look! I’m not all into the feather hair extensions or feather necklaces, but feather nails is totally in my future (especially how I just recently stopped biting my nails so this is to show off my new long nails!!)
OMG this is so cute. I saw something like this on tumblr and can’t WAIT to try this out. Thanks so much for making it so simple :)
This looks gorgeous! I’ve got to try sth like that! ;D
Omg I love this!! I’m totally obsessed with feathers. You should do a video tutorial on this! I’m not the most artist person so its hard for me to figure out exactly how to cut the feathers onto your nail!
This is so awesome and cute. I immediately went to try it but they didn’t have any feathers like these at michaels :( did you get yours at a specific place other than michaels?
hey hannah, im so happy you like the manicure. i used feathers from michaels. they were in a bag on a shelf under the boas. hope this helps :)
how long does this last?
almost a week :)
I tried it, but mine look really sloppy. They got messed up mostly while cutting them. Any tips?
you guys should make videos! this is great
I didn’t have the time or patience to do all my nails but i decided to do it as an accent nail. and i actually used a feather from our yard (we have chickens lol) here’s a pic, not the best lighting
http://yfrog.com/kke5xxzj
that is amazing! i love it so much! i love how your minty jade shows through the middle of the feather! love it!!! thanks for sharing! :)
I’m so excited I found this! I’m always looking for pretty quick cool things to do on my nails!! Totally awesome, I’m getting feathers first thing in the morning!

wowww those nails are AMAZING! definitely need to try them out sometime :)
XO Sahra
EffortlessCool
I feel like there is no way that I could do this on my own. It’s super gorgeous but I don’t have the talent to make a feather look that pretty on my nail!

just did this, it’s amazing! thank you for putting this up!
lovely! trying it right now!
I just did this last night and ALL my co-workers insisted on knowing where I got my nails done! Nobody believed me when I said I did them at home after being inspired by your post! Thanks for the wonderful idea! Keep them coming! :)
thats funny cuz Adrienne Bailon has that on here page……..an it her picture! mmmmm .. creative?
how could u assume this was her pic when u can check our post dates and see that mine was first? this took a lot of time and effort so thanks for pointing out that a celeb stole my pics lol. guess I’ll comment at her site to let her know credit should be given so no one else accuses me of stealing my own hard work.
Adrienne Bailon didn’t just steal your pics, she copy-pasted your entire post! How rude. I still love this – as soon as my exams are over I MUST try it! I’ve tried some of your other tutorials (the easier less finicky ones!) and they all worked out amazing, I’ve never had so many compliments on my nails before. Thank you!
hey natalie, can you believe that she took my pics and text? now that im at a computer, i had to look it up thinking maybe it was a fan or imposter site, but it’s definitely hers, linked to from her official twitter page. SHOCKED!!! but she didn’t take all my text, she took out the part about me and my sis hanging out working on this together, as though this was all her own!
im so happy you’ve tried some of my manicures and got lots of compliments on it! that’s awesome! i hope you’re following manicure mondays at their new home http://www.fabfatale.com my new beauty and lifestyle blog :) thanks again for the comment!
You make it look so easy to do.
I have to try this!!
